circuit board serial connection compatible with usb connector instead?

Im going to be doing some electronics work soon, and im looking at a cir brd with a spot for a serial port connector. instead of buying one of those and soldering it to the board, can i use a molex connector and just put a usb port there or will that not work?
thats basically what im asking though, I have to program the pics and isd chip, so i could somehow change the 4 pin connection on the board to a usb rather than a serial right? with software?
USB and serial are not directly compatible. That’s why companys like Belkin make adapters like model # F5U109.
If you are designing a board, you might be able to use a PIC microcontroller to convert serial to / from USB.
