Computer Hardware — is a convertor/connector available to connect serial mouse to USB port?

usb serial connector
Curious asked:

Have a mouse that came with old computer. It worked on the “serial/parallel” port.

My laptop has USB ports only.

1. Is a connector/convertor available that i can plug into the USB port and connect my previous mouse with the connector at the other end?

2. how much would it cost?

3. Am I better off, simply just, buying a new optical mouse (or any other mouse) that directly connects to the USB port?

  • I’m sure that there’s a converter out there somewhere. Have you tried out simple stores like Best Buy? But, I would just buy another mouse if I were you. They’re relatively inexpensive.

  • First, yes, most PS/2 mice come with such a device, it’s green most of the time, and converts that for you. However, if it’s my call, and as the owner of a pretty extreme computer store, I make such calls pretty often, I’d spend a couple extra bucks on decent optical mouse, and just not worry about conversions and move on…

    Good luck…

  • if you have an old mouse with a ball it is time to feed it to the cat and get an optical, logitech has many optical models for less than $20 many come with the USB PS2 adapter so it is versitile

  • yes, u can buy convertors, their little green things; one ends PS/2 and the other USB. But i i were you i would judt get a optical mouse

  • I got my wife a really small Microsoft Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse. The USB receiver snaps into the bottom of the mouse when you’re done and turns the mouse off to save the batteries. It was only like $15.
