A serial connector is about 3/4 of an inch wide, trapozoid in shape with nine holes in two rows, and has two ***** to hold the connector in place. It is NOT a standard place to connector a mouse. If that is what you are really using, then you have to go into the COntrol Panel and the Mouse icon and tell it that you are using a serial mouse. It is unable to detect serial devices through plug and play.
If it is actually a PS2 connector (the more common), it is a round connector just a little smaller then a dime with a circle of pins inside. Usually if the computer is not detect a PS2 mouse, it is because the mouse is in the keyboard rather than the mouse port. Move it to the other similar port on the computer, reboot, and see if that does it.
Are you sure you’re not plugging into the keyboard slot? Check to see if the pins are bent on the mouse end.
