Question by Alan H: How do I connect a Samsung VP D361 Mini dv camera to a laptop with no firewire ports or express card slots?
I have tried connecting a firewire express card to a USB2/Firewire connector, but it still will not recognise the camera.

Best answer:

Answer by Little Dog
There is no such thing as a “USB2/Firewire connector” on a computer. Either the computer port is USB or it is firewire (IEEE1394) compliant. It cannot be both. SOunds like you learned the hard way that USB to firewire converter/adapter/hub/cable things do not work. Oh well…

With no buit-in firewire port or available expansion slot (PCMCIA or ExpressCard), there is no way to connect a miniDV tape based camcorder to that computer to transfer high quality DV-format video. In the remote event you get USB streaming to work, the video quality will be poor.

You have two options:

1) Get/borrow/rent a computer with a fireport and import the video, then transfer the video files to your computer (likely over a network – DV format video uses about 14 gig of computer hard drive space per hour of imported DV quality video).

2) Transfer analog video using a analog/digital converter like those form Pinnacle (Dazzle).
