The USB connector to my External Hard Drive broke off, is my Ex Hard Drive permanently damage? Or can I still recover the data from it?

The External Hard Drive is WD Passport and there only one of connecting it to a computer. My question are there other ways of accessing an External Hard Drive other than use of a USB cable?

Can you just plug it into your computer, and run the software, or do you need to use the included USB cable? I’m planning on buying just the connector on ebay, but I saw on the Nintendo website that it might not work without the USB extension cable. Is that true?
