WPA encyption is usually supported now days for home and company based Wifi. WEP is better than nothing be easily hacked.
USB-based Wifi is a bit inconvenient because it has to be un-hooked before you put the laptop away.
If your laptop has a pc express or pcmicia slot it is more convenient for a Wifi card. If you have a late model laptop it already has Wifi builtin in. If your putting Wifi on a desktop use a Wifi card.
Most public access Wifi hotspots don’t have any encyption. If your connected to a secure website through these public hot spots someone can see the packet but can’t understand it.
